Romania Spotlight

After suffering for more than 40 years under communist rule, the people of Romania are struggling to rebuild their nation and their lives.  Although Communism fell over 30 years ago and the country is now part of the European Union, there is still terrible poverty in many of the poorer rural areas and the country has many scars.

Romania has the highest number of orphaned children in Europe.

Statistics show that the number of children entering its child welfare system is 10,000 each year and primarily from Roma origin.

Along with children many women face very difficult lives. A large proportion of women are having to bring up children by themselves in extremely poor conditions and older women struggle to look after themselves due to the lack of social care and support.
